In this chapter we trace the ‘diasporic’ wanderings of the manuscript that reappeared in Venice in 1609, in Sarajevo in 1894, only to disappear and reappear again after World War II, and following the Bosnian War of 1992. The Sarajevo Haggadah, the 14th century illuminated manuscript spirited out of Catalonia after the Edict of Expulsion of 1492, enriches and amplifies our understanding of the term ‘diaspora.’1 A ritual text of Jewish identity, and material culture of an exiled people, it represents a unique window into the diverse society of Muslims, Jews and Christians of medieval Iberia, as well as a priceless work of art with accumulated layers of meaning.
